How Sankaradeva offered sarana
Sankaradeva used to place the Bhāgavata (the original, or in translation) in the prayer hall and initiate neophytes into sarana.
Rāmānanda says that Sankaradeva received his first neophytes in this way:
He first made them bow to the Bhāgavata and said, “Do you all take refuge in Hari; ” he then rendered the upadesa saying, “Listen, O people, know Lord Krishna (alone) from this day; know no deity other than the son of Daivaki; all creeds except nāmadharma are meaningless; there are no friends other than the bhaktas. This, I tell you, is the essence of all scriptures put together.”
